Doughnuts - Queen Victoria Market
The Krispy Kreme bandwagon hullabaloo has hit Melbourne big time, with a second store scheduled to open later this month. My question is, why would one want to eat a mass produced highly processed product when one can eat something like this:
From this:
The Doughnut Van is a veritable institution at the Queen Victoria Market, cooking hand rolled, jam filled, sugar crusted yeasty little beauties for over 50 years. I can remember venturing down to the Vic with my parents at a very early age, our visit not complete without stopping by for one of their ‘nuts. You’d be so eager to scarf it in a few big bites, but ever wary of the piping hot jam within. Most of the time you would declare “Bugger it” and suffer the scald. It was, and is, worth it.

I LOVE those things! There are so many good things to munch on while you’re shopping at the Vic markets!

Hey Ferg! They do kinda have that effect on you, huh? I was at dinner the night before and we were discussing the KK phenomenon. This led on to the Vic Market doughnuts, which suddenly ignited my tastebudd. Next morning…uh huh…guess what I had for breakfast? That’s right…those two photographed doughnuts and a cafe latte!
Hey M (of emzeegee!) - How goes it? Thanks for the link - that is a great blog. And I’m glad you’re enjoying my efforts. So - when are we going to get another RAS recipe of the week? *knudge knudge*
Hiya Lady Lunchalot - damn skippy. How can one not much on a million things when at the Vic? I am particularly fond of the spinach and cheese boreks. And the lumberjack muffins. Oh my god…and the cheeses aplenty. Then there are the olives, the fruits, the veg…… i could go on.

Me, I’m a churros man. I think the van is on the opposite side to the doughnut van.

I just had my first experience of these a few weeks ago - WOW have I been missing out! My guy and I bought a little bag of them, it almost turned into a wrestle when I wanted to have his share as well!

Hiya Neil. Uh huh, I love the churros as well. I usually alternate - so perhaps I’ll blog those ones next time ;-). Hmm…the hardships I must endure.
Hey there Anna. Personally I would have wrestled him for it. No man (or woman for that matter) is gonna get between me and my yeast products!

Hey there mountain (aka. Dad) - I’d send you up some, but as you very well know they taste crap once cold. Hmm…you’ll just have to get your ass down here!

Ooooh these ones are yummy, and there’s nowhere in the Vic market that you can’t smell them, but you MUST try the doughnuts at the Polish Deli (deli hall at the Vic mkt). Rich, dense, real-yeast dough filled with velvety black plum jam. They’re only baked a couple of times a week but definitely worth holding out for… Mmmmmmmm
